Updating the Windows Azure Story

If you're paying close attention, you already know this, but it's still worth pointing out that Microsoft has changed various aspects of what was called the Azure Services Platform. It's now known as the Windows Azure platform, and some pieces have been deleted, such as the Workflow part of .NET Services. For a current description, take a look at the updated version of my paper Introducing the Windows Azure Platform (formerly called Introducing the Azure Services Platform).
Is this the end of changes in this technology? Probably not--there may well be more updates before it's generally available later this year. Still, if you care about cloud computing, keeping up with Microsoft's cloud platform isn't a bad thing to do.

The main reason was that .NET Services Workflow was based on version 3.5 of the .NET Framework, and Version 4 will be out soon. Windows Workflow Foundation in .NET 4 changes quite a bit, so releasing a cloud version that didn't match this forthcoming technology wouldn't make much sense. I'm expecting Workflow to reappear in the Azure platform once WF version 4 is available, although I'm not aware of any guarantees that Microsoft has made here.

Microsoft technology is a huge part of our industry, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The real question is which of the company's technologies will have the most career value for you going forward.
The answer depends on some things you know, like what kind of work you do, and some things that are harder to know, like the success of industry trends such as cloud computing. But whatever happens, I'm sure that Microsoft technology will be a significant part of our lives for years to come.
